My style of art is expressive and I love experimenting with color and movement in my pieces. I enjoy working with a multitude of mediums, but if I were to pick my top 3 would be painting, sculpture, and printmaking. With painting I work with palette knives and textural movements, with sculpture I appreciate the endless possibilities of materials that I can work with, and finally with printmaking I enjoy the textural components that naturally come with each printing process.
Looking back, what advice would you give yourself?
Don’t procrastinate on your work and be brave. 9/10 times you’ll do better than you think by just trying it out and the other 1/10 you’ll know how to fix it to work for you.
What's your favorite A+D memory?
Working in the studios with my fellow classmates, those were always the times we bonded the most I believe.
What was your favorite A+D class? I really enjoyed my Sculpture 2 class because of the freedom to experiment and create anything we could imagine while developing new skills such as welding and utilizing technology to our advantage. This is definitely the studio class where my pieces developed the most meaning and background behind them as well.
What moment, project, and/or critique in your Art + Design career at AU has been pivotal to who you are as an artist or creator?
The first summative painting assignment I had was the most pivotal project for me in developing my style and is still one of my favorite paintings that I’ve created. This project allowed me to experiment with the palette knife style I’d been excited to try out and helped me to see colors in unique ways that help me to push my works further and further. This expressive usage of color, texture, and movement was the beginning of developing my true style of art I believe.
What's next for you?
My plan is to teach at a middle school while continuing to develop my own artistic abilities.
How do you hope your work makes an impact?
I hope my work helps others see the world differently both visually and meaningfully and I hope my work as a teacher helps students realize they CAN create art and that art can be a reliable outlet for them.
