Stories play a massive role in our everyday lives. We hear stories, true or fictional, short or long, and either way we love hearing and telling them to others. I love the moment when you walk into the middle of a bizarre or whimsical scene in a film and you think to yourself ‘what on earth is going on?’. I wanted to make a body of work showcasing in between story moments that make the audience create judgments of their own as to what they believe is true. Robots are used in every artwork since people tend to see them as a sort of pet. Depending on their actions or look, they can go from cute to vicious very quickly. Regardless, it is easy to get attached to a robot as you would for a cat or dog. As for materials, watercolor was an easy choice since it can allow for a vagueness most desirable for audience interpretation, while maintaining a brilliant vibrant pallet. Ink not only helps create focal points with sharp contrast against the watercolors, but it can define details and allow for an illustrative look most associated with comics or animated films.
Looking back, what advice would you give yourself?
Stop fighting the paint! Let it do it’s thing.
What's your favorite A+D memory?
In my anatomy drawing class, two other students and I had been running behind on our work so we had to pull two all-nighters to finish our body of works. We finished an hour before critique and we were nearly hallucinating how tired we were, and nearly anything we said while working made us laugh uncontrollably. Not my finest moment but it will definitely live on in this brain.
What was your favorite A+D class? My favorite A+D class has to be my advanced drawing class since the reins were finally let loose and we were allowed to create a body of work without any boundaries. It was so exciting to see what other students wanted to pursue with their work, and see their full range of creativity.
What moment, project, and/or critique in your Art + Design career at AU has been pivotal to who you are as an artist or creator?
I took an anatomy drawing class, and the whole semester was dedicated to creating a body of work, and it was there I decided to go through the story of Frankenstein in six artworks. It allowed my passion for art and film to come together.
What's next for you?
I plan on starting my first large scale graphic novel that I have been writing for a couple years.
I hope my stories give the audience a sense of excitement, joy, maybe shed a few tears, and even feel a little bit of fear, but most importantly inspire them to create as well.
