Hi, I'm Jocelin Flora, a graphic designer who is passionate about using design to tell stories. I'm constantly searching for new methods to push the boundaries of what's feasible because I believe that design has the ability to ignite emotions and create connections. To maintain the originality and creativity of my work, I'm constantly learning and experimenting with new design approaches.

In my role as a designer, my work should leave a lasting impression in addition to functionality and aesthetics. I view and employ design as a tool for communication that can spark creativity and inspire others. Process, development, and creativity are therefore central concepts in my work. Making "aesthetic designs" is not enough for me; I want to be able to create works that can reach an audience and communicate deeper and more significant ideas.

Therefore, design, in my opinion, shines when it incorporates a harmonious blend of digital and physical elements. Physicality and materialistic thinking are essential to the essence of my design because they enable me to translate my ideas into actual forms. My goal is to provide a design that inspires emotions, makes a lasting impression, and makes viewers say "Wow." My creative pursuits, encompassing my designs and sculptures, enable me to participate in the process of creation and environmental transformation. I see my hands as an instrument, a weapon, and a symbol.

Looking back, what advice would you give yourself?

Looking back, I would tell myself not to be scared of taking risks. Big risks mean big rewards. I would also tell myself that it's important to have a healthy work-life balance, don't push yourself so hard that you burn out.

What's your favorite A+D memory?

My favorite A+D memory is walking with the design cohort to Common House to get coffee and/or snacks. This time brought us closer together and I always looked forward to it!

What was your favorite A+D class?

My favorite A+D class is actually what I am taking right now; Advanced 3D Studies. During my time at Anderson I have found my love for sculpture and this class is especially my favorite because I have the ability to create whatever I desire without being restrained.

What moment, project, and/or critique in your Art + Design career at AU has been pivotal to who you are as an artist or creator?

The magazine project during History of Graphic Design was one of the pivotal moments in my A+D Design career. This project opened my eyes to what it truly means to design in addition to working in a group setting.

What's next for you?

I'm not quite sure what's in store for me next. I will be pursuing a career in Graphic Design but while I am looking for a job in that field, I will be continuing to produce sculptures and work at 2nd & Charles.

How do you hope your work makes an impact?

My goal is to provide a design that inspires emotions, makes a lasting impression, and makes viewers say "Wow."

Give us a preview of what you're working on for the Senior Show!

I will be creating a "chair" in two sizes that the audience will be putting together themselves.
